During March 2008, 688 MVC students responded to the in-class administration of the CCSSE survey.  CCSSE provides information about effective educational practice in community colleges and assists institutions in using that information to promote improvements in student learning and persistence.  Student engagement, or the amount of time and energy that students invest in meaningful educational practices, is the underlying foundation for CCSSE’s work.  The CCSSE survey instrument is designed to capture student engagement as a measure of institutional quality.

MVC Results for the Benchmarks of Effective Educational Practice - The five benchmarks of effective educational practice encompass 38 engagement items from the CCSSE survey that reflect many of the most important aspects of the student experience.  This 11 page report includes a one page summary bar chart comparing MVC 2008 benchmark results to the results of MVC in 2005, other DCCCD colleges, HSI-HACU colleges, and the CCSSE national cohort.  Pages two through six portray the frequency distribution of MVC responses to the survey items that make up the benchmarks.  Pages 7-11 compare MVC part-time student benchmark scores to full-time students, and students with 30+ credit hours to those with <30 credit hours.

During Spring semester 2008, 50 MVC faculty (33 full-time and 17 adjuncts) responded to the on-line administration of the CCFSSE.  The CCFSSE, designed as a companion to the CCSSE, elicits information from faculty about their teaching practices, the ways they spend their professional time, both in and out of class, and their perceptions regarding students’ educational experiences.
