Attendance and/or tardy policy: Students are expected to attend class.

Type and number of examinations: Four exams, each consisting of multiple-choice, short-answer, and essay questions.

Other required quizzes: Six take-home essay quizzes based on primary sources in the Discovering book.

Q: How is the total grade earned?
A: Points are earned by completing the exams and quizzes.  A limited number of extra credit points are available.  A scale is used to translate the points earned to a letter grade at the end of the semester.

Q: What suggestions do you have for student who wants to succeed in your class?
A: Attend class and be engaged.  Use the Study Guide provided.  Read the texts.  Complete assignments thoroughly and on time.  Study.  Ask me questions about the subject matter. Enjoy the opportunity to learn!

Carlos Barron

Mr. Barron has 20 years of public school teaching in varous school districts in Texas. He has taught at Alamo Community College District in San Antonio, TX. He also taught at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, TX from 1992-1999. He started teaching at MVC in the fall of 1999. While at Tarleton he was a student teacher supervisor of prospective math teachers. He is a member of the National Council of Math Teachers. He has been a speaker at the Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teachers from 1999-2003. While teaching at Mountain View he has completed several reports on institutional effectiveness concerning our developmental mathematics program. Some of his data was used in the Title V report which MVC was awarded in 2001.

Paul Benson

Dr. Paul Benson is a Professor of English, Religion, and Humanities. He holds a B.A. in English from Pacific Lutheran College, an M.A. in English from Colorado State University, and a Ph.D. in English from The University of North Texas. As a Mountain View College "Pioneer" faculty member, Dr. Benson has taught at MVC since 1970. He brings a broad range of interests to his teaching. He has published articles in both literature and music. His interest in cultures around the world sparked his co-founding of the Texas Cultural Alliance and its program, "Excursions," through which he has organized student tours of ancient sites around the world.
 
Over the years, Dr. Benson has received just about every honor in teaching including nomination for the "Minnie Stephens Piper Professorship" as the most outstanding teacher at Mountain View College and "Innovator of the Year" for his humanities program, "Project Show." Dr. Benson is a national leader in community college humanities instruction and has served on the national Board of Directors of the Community College Humanities Association. Complementing his creative video productions, most recently, he has initiated instruction in composition in a distant learning format and is in the process of developing instructional CDs in the humanities.
